Urea Formaldehyde Slow-Release Nitrogen Technology

Steady Nitrogen Release Through Natural Soil Processes

Urea formaldehyde is a slow-release nitrogen technology, supplied by Nu-Tec, that relies on microbial activity to extend nutrient availability beyond the initial application.

When a Quick Nitrogen Response Isn’t Enough

Some turf programs require nitrogen availability well beyond the immediately available portion of an application. Urea formaldehyde provides extended feeding by releasing nitrogen progressively as soil microbes break it down.

A Versatile Source of Slow-Release Nitrogen

Urea formaldehyde is a slow-release nitrogen technology in which more than 60% of the total nitrogen is present as water-insoluble nitrogen (WIN). A small soluble fraction becomes available first, while the remaining nitrogen is released gradually through microbial activity. Available SGN sizes include 100, 150 and 240.

How Soil Microbes Release Urea Formaldehyde Nitrogen

  1. A Soluble Fraction Releases First

A small portion of the nitrogen is water soluble, providing some availability soon after application.

  2. Water-Insoluble Nitrogen Remains

More than 60% of the total nitrogen remains in water-insoluble form for gradual release.

  3. Soil Microbes Drive Release

Microbial activity gradually converts ureaform into plant-available nitrogen forms within the soil.

  4. Chain Length Sets the Pace

Longer ureaform chains break down more slowly, extending the nitrogen release period.

Consistent Feeding Across the Growing Season

The result is an extended nutrient supply designed to support consistent turf growth over a longer feeding period, with SGN 100, 150 and 240 particle sizes to suit different blending and application requirements.

Extended Feeding

Gradual microbial release provides a long-lasting source of nitrogen throughout the growing period.

Reduced Application Frequency

Extended nitrogen availability may reduce the frequency of fertilizer applications required through the season.

Flexible Blending Options

SGN 100, 150 and 240 particle sizes support different granular blends and application methods.

Release Independent of Coating Integrity

Unlike coated controlled-release technologies, urea formaldehyde does not rely on an intact coating to regulate nitrogen release.

Where Urea Formaldehyde Technology Fits

Urea formaldehyde technology is suited to professional turf applications, including golf courses, sports fields and managed landscapes. SGN 100, 150 and 240 particle sizes provide options for different granular blends and broadcast applications.
